An Important Announcement

Recently I have been accepted into an apprenticeship  as a way of getting income in as well as something I can add to my portfolio. However, this is a full time course and as such, I will be unable to attend lessons at the regular times. I am however, planning to complete the first year of the course and will be using whatever free time I have to do the necessary work for my portfolio and tests.

Updates to this blog may be less frequent than before and at different intervals as such, not to mention I will have to rely more on self teaching as such. I still plan to work at the same level as I have normally and hope that I can pass the course regardless of the change in the circumstances.

Maya is alright I guess

Animating is something I’ve done a lot but I still need to do more as part of the portfolio I need to set up. I am guessing it’s because we need to do something with an industry standard model, which is why the animation must be done with a model known as Moom. It is quite well made so I can see why they would want to have me use the model for the animation.

If I remember correctly there is an entire set of animations we can choose to do, ranging from amateur to intermediate to expert. For the time being I am focusing on a walking cycle, which I know is mandatory regardless of skill level. I’ve done walk cycles before but not with a humanoid style model, so this brings about it’s own set of challenges I will have to deal with.

I have spent the past week on it, with a lot of time merely spent getting used to the Moom model as it has a tendency to break and warp if used improperly. I have gotten down some of the start of animation creation, though it will likely be long as I want to at least get 60 frames worth of animation in there. I might go the full 120 if I have the time to create as much.

Damn it after effects

Another after effects post so i’ll keep this short.

We’re doing yet another project about animating a piece of text for 8 seconds about media. I’m not doing that cause i can’t decide so i’m using basic text.

I don’t think i can do it because i don’t trust my ability in after effects to do a solo project. It’s tough but all i can do is do my best which isn’t too good.

How many sculpting programs are there

Even if I’m not good at art in the slightest they tend to be some of the more relaxing lessons really. Doesn’t feel as easy to mess something up and I tend not to feel as much pressure which is weird considering the feeling I have with trying to make up for my overall lack of artistic skills, but there’s that. This time was similar, except it was more of a mixture of another lesson which is a nice change.

It isn’t the first time I’ve used a modelling program in an art lesson, as a while back I was told about using Maya and then importing the Maya file into Mudbox to do some artistic style stuff. It was a nice change but not great, but this case was much better. Here I was using a program known as Sculptris for the first time, which is pretty simple but very effect as a program, which made it fun to use.

It was once again focused on heads, though it had the added bit of trying to make an entire humanoid shape which was challenging and I didn’t get up to yet, but I did my best in modelling the head. It took some getting used to of all the tools since it isn’t entirely clear cut in how to use them or have them be effective, but I made a good start even if my head has some noticeable errors on it.

Better than nothing

I’m pretty sure I’ve made a title like this for another post before but I don’t really mind because it makes for a good title in that it fits what I’m going on about. I’m starting yet another project because having at least 3 or 4 going on at the same time wasn’t enough so now I’m just going through this and even if my work sucks then at least I have something to show and I can get a barely qualifying grade.

So the project from before is coming up I don’t even remember if I made a blog post about it but pretty much I’m making a spiral staircase and I’m already regretting it because how am I supposed to make a spiral staircase with my skill level but whatever I’m stuck with this now so I have to do it unless I want to let the entire team down because it’s a team effort I feel sorry for them being stuck with me.

Just as I thought making a staircase that looks good is hard and I’ll probably need to redo the entire thing again later if it turns out as bad as it is, but maybe that’ll get me some brownie points for putting in effort or something like that. All I know is I’m sorry for the people who are working with me to be stuck with someone as bad as me making something for a group project, I really am.

Portfolio thing

My life has kind of been in the gutter lately so my standard of work has drastically gone down so don’t expect much from this post I mean I was considering not even coming in because I am heavily lacking in both confidence and motivation especially in regards to this course because of you know what. Really you should just see what this is and then we’ll see if things get better.

We need to do something for the portfolio today. We were told we could do anything we wanted as long as we were good at it but it seems everyone just decided to do unity stuff which I can see because it’s been a while since we did anything with 3D unity I guess. We made a cube move about and stuff and implemented some other things using code, not so much me but you know.

I made it rotate and I tried to make it move up and down but it didn’t work mainly because I decided to use some crap code that was a mess. So I didn’t do too much. There was also something about making a sphere bounce and then change it’s form with each bounce but that didn’t happen either because that code is pretty complex and expecting me to do complex code is a fairy tale to be honest.

Another project yay

Like the title says there’s more work to do and I’ve got to do it to a good standard or else I’ll be letting a team down because that’s what is happening right now. Pretty much we got put in groups and were told to make a scene based on a theme and we’re all making assets for it because we have to. More chances for me to set people up for disappointment which is just great.

We decided to do a fantasy style thing and so we were making up ideas of what to do and so it was kinda basic what we wanted to do. Then we decided what assets we would make list based on importance so we could decide. I went with the fancy stairs to use and so I did some research on what stair designs to use and how I would implement them, which was simple enough to do.

Whilst I didn’t get into the modelling part yet, I feel like next time I get the chance to make it I’ll be able to do something well with it. I have a good idea on what to do plus the others gave me an idea of what they’d want to see from the stairs, so I’d want to at least follow up for their image they had in mind, even if it doesn’t even look good I can say I made it based on what they want.
